DHAHIRAH REGION :
This region is situated in the north-west of Oman. Its
name means "the back," aptly so, as it lies at the
back of the Western Hajar mountain range which separates it
from the Batinah region, "the belly" of Oman.
A huge part of the land is covered by an enormous semi-sandy
plain stretching from the foothills of the Western Hajar and
extending into the harsh, arid desert area of the Rub Al Khali
(also known as the Empty Quarter) which runs more than 1,000
Km westward, crossing the region's border with Saudi Arabia.

Buraimi is the border town situated in the extreme north-west
with the United Arab Emirates. The Jebel al Kawr mountains separate
Al Dhahirah from the Dakhiliyah region.
Due to the harsh terrain, most of the region is sparsely populated
and camels graze freely. There are also many springs in the
region providing water which is channelled from the mountains
via sophisticated falaj systems (water canals) to the towns
and settlements. Residents engage in agriculture, animal rearing,
weaving and various crafts. Regular performances of dances,
songs, ancient recitals and displays of swordmanship keep tradition
and legends of warriors and wars fought alive. |

Throughout
history the region's importance was due to its strategic position
for trade between the rest of the Arabian peninsula and the
northern Oman coastal region. Vast caravans of traders carrying
goods on camels and donkeys made their way to the coast. Ibri,
the main town and administrative capital, was a regular stopping
place for traders and travellers.
Areas are filled with old watchtowers and forts, ancient tombs
and ruins of abandoned settlements. There are caves to explore.
Now the region is best known for its oil and archaeological
sites.
